Symbolic Meanings behind Jacob’s Ladder and Joseph’s Coat

Jacob’s Ladder and the Law of Cycles

The old testament contains some key passages that allow us to peek behind the workings of the law of cycles. These keys are usually given in the form of a vision or a dream.

One of these keys is the dream about Jacob’s ladder. In this dream Jacob saw angels ascending and descending up and down a ladder. And it reached from earth (matter) all the way up to heaven (spirit).

In Genesis 28:10-13 we read the following story.

“And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran. And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set. And he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. And, behold, the LORD stood above it…”

Ladder to Heaven

Idea of Hierarchy

Angels at different positions on higher and lower rungs of Jacob’s ladder conveys the idea of hierarchy.

Jacob’s dream gave him the understanding of an inherent order, from the highest heavens above to the lowest realms below.

We will make use of spreadsheets. They are like a series of ladders next to each other, to show examples of the law of cycles.

Weaving Joseph’s Coat

The story of Jacob weaving Joseph’s coat of many colors is another key. It is a way of understanding and visualizing the mechanisms at work behind the law of cycles.

We find this in Genesis 37:3, “Now Israel [Jacob] loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.”

Loom

The metaphor of weaving a cloth from threads of different colors and lengths is another key.

Like a series of ladders next to each other, a spreadsheet is also like a loom for weaving.

Cosmic Grid

The columns represent the longitudinal warp threads, and the rows represent the “filling” or weft threads, also known as “woof.”

In some esoteric circles this warp and woof of creation is known as the “cosmic grid.”

Going from chapter to chapter throughout this course, we add new topics and levels of understanding as we go.

We will be creating a more and more intricate “fabric” or “tapestry!”
